Take Flight 20 – Day 11, Clean, simple, mailable cards
February 14, 2013
Designer Heather Telford has two cards to share today that she created with Penny Black’s new silhouette stamps. The green one is clean and simple, and the orange is a little busier, but still one layer. Read on and get some insight into how she layers stamps and Memento ink to create depth.
I masked the card base with post-it notes and brayered the panel with the lightest green and stamped a few leaves using the new wood mounted stamp Verdant. I then sponged a darker green and again stamped some leaves. I used three greens, Memento New Sprout, Pear Tart and Bamboo Leaves. Then I removed the mask and stamped the sentiment from the transparent set, Friendship and some final leaves in Versafine Olympia Green.
I used some of the same techniques to create the orange card but covered the whole card base with colour and splattered masking fluid before each colour application.
I splattered masking fluid on the white card base with a toothbrush and when it was dry sponged and stamped the silhouette stamps from the Slapstick Cling set, Longing, in Memento Dandelion ink.
I splattered another lot of masking fluid before stamping and sponging in Memento Canteloupe and again before adding Memento Tangelo. When I had finished the stamping and sponging in those three colours I positioned a rectangular post-it mask in the centre of the card base and sponged a border in Versafine Habanero Ink, removed the mask and added the final flower flourishes and a sentiment from the transparent set, Love Chapter.

Hi Beverley,
Masking fluid is a sticky liquid that dries rubbery so that you can peel or rub it off when you are finished. It is commonly used by watercolour artists to mask white spaces on their paintings. You can find it in art supply stores in the painting section.
