Summer Sun Collaboration: Day 1
As the summer sun begins to rise and the temps heat up, what better way to beat the heat than crafting! Join us all this week for a special collaboration with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft. We’re sharing fun projects here on our blog using Paper Crafter Crayons and Double Scoop Gelatos AND you’ll find projects from the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft designers on their blog featuring our stamps. We want you to join in the fun, too, so don’t miss the giveaway details at the end of this post.
Elizabeth kicks off the summer fun with a stunning “Les Petites” card box.
Create a 3 ¾ x 5 3/8 x ¾ lidded box with mat board. Cover the pieces with painter’s tape to reinforce the seams and add overall texture. Paint both pieces with Faber-Castell Gesso. When dry, apply Double Scoop Gelato in Snow Cone equally to the lid and box then blend with a damp cloth. Paint with Faber-Castell Gel Medium. Next, apply Double Scoop Gelato in Metallic Melon on both pieces with the heavier concentration placed on the lid and blend.
Ink Dotted Fusion with Faber-Castell Gesso and stamp on all four sides of the bottom portion of the box. Tip/Hint: To achieve an even application of gesso to the stamp, apply gesso with a brayer.
Die cut “Dots” from white cardstock and trim into 3 equal strips. Coat each strip with melted dark aqua Paper Crafter Crayons. Attach the strips to the edge of the box lid using Faber-Castell Gel Medium as an adhesive.
Die cut three large flowers (Pinwheel) and three small flowers (Tweet Things) from white cardstock. “Smoosh” each flower into melted puddles of Paper Crafter Crayons. (See melting tips below.) Apply Faber-Castell Glaze to each flower and let dry. Accent the centers of the smaller flowers with white brads and attach to the centers of the larger flowers with dimensional foam tape. Affix the finished flowers to the box lid with dimensional foam tape. Tip/Hint: After the melted Paper Crafter Crayons have been applied, paint the backs of the larger flowers with black acrylic paint. This will add a professional finish to any visible parts of the flowers that overhang the lid.
Fill your custom, hand-designed box with an assortment of cards and envelopes from Penny Black’s Les Petites collection.
MELTING TECHNIQUES
Tip/Hint: An inverted iron can be used as a “hot plate”. Cover the bottom of an iron with tin foil and prop between wood blocks. This will allow you to use the melted Paper Crafter Crayons in two ways. First, the Paper Crafter Crayons can be scribbled on the hot surface to create multiple molten puddles of wax to dip or “smoosh” die cuts into (as used with the flowers shown above). Second, for more precise control, an image or die cut can be placed directly on the warm surface and the heat will penetrate through the paper and melt the Paper Crafter Crayons directly on the desired spot as you color. This technique is great for flowers with leaves when you want to control color placement. Here is a finished example using Penny Black’s Creative Die “Dainty”:
A white cardstock die cut of “Dainty” was placed on the “hot plate” iron. Orange and yellow Paper Crafter Crayons were colored directly on the surface of the flower heads. Two different tones of green Paper Crafter Crayons were then used to color the leaves and stems. This direct-to-paper coloring/heat technique was also used for the dotted aqua strips. Tip/Hint: To avoid unwanted blending, change the tin foil between color applications.

I like the idea with the iron. It makes interesting options to play with.
Fantastic creations. I think papercrafters crayons might be my next obsession
The flowers are beautiful. I would love to try this technique.
very beautiful project, Love these two great companies. What a great week its going to be!!
I love Faber-Castell products but have never use the Paper Crafter Crayons. I am looking forward to trying them out. The tips were great. How do you keep from burning your fingers when you color the cutouts on top of the iron? I have used gelatos and really like working with them but I’m not sure what the double scoop gelato is.
Hello Pat. When working on top of the iron I use tweezers to lift off the image. The direct-to-paper with the crayons also eliminates having your fingers by the hot wax. The Double Scoop Gelato is a larger version of the regular Gelato. They are great for covering large areas as well as using for multiple applications. Twice the goodness in one stick.
What a great combo of products!
Pretty flowers, great idea will have to give it a try.
oh wow, how cool are these! What an awesome technique!
