Runs with Scissors

March 24, 2018

Hello, hello, hello. I am happy to be back … company gone, house quiet, spirit nurtured. My brain has filed away more happy memories of time spent with family. The youngest daughter of our combined families and her husband spent a few days with us last week. Due to our failure to check the weather reports for their visit, we spent the lovely days doing indoor activities and the rainy days trying to work in a scenic walk between rain storms. When the weather didn’t cooperate with our outdoor plans, we switched to Plan B which involved popcorn and a movie and an Early Bird Special dinner. Since we served dinner at 8:00 pm one night, and had the next dinner at 4:00 pm, our dinner time averaged out to 6:00 pm. Just right. That’s my story and I am sticking with it.

Once the company left I was right back into stamping mode, my other happy place. There are so many possibilities with the Sweet Spring release that my cards almost made themselves this week.

Flowers blooming and birds singing: it must be spring! I spent some relaxing minutes coloring this image after stamping it with the Aviary cling stamp. I found the neutral tones very relaxing and added a burst of color with a red violet marker. I smiled when I saw how the sentiment from the Grateful Heart set aligned itself with the lines of the bird house roof.

Filling these Frames with diecut flowers was almost as satisfying as planting my own flower garden. The flower dies are included in the Frames set and I tucked a bit of greenery created with the Airy die behind the flowers. The Curved Stitch die adds an elegant edge to the white cardstock, don’t you think? The sentiment is one half of the So Many Thanks die cut. For those of you who hesitate to cut your stamp sentiments in half, you could practice by cutting the die cut sentiments. Versatility is a good thing.

For this card, I overstamped this large and meaningful sentiment from the Just Believe transparent set onto my Copic colored Tulip Bouquet. I have spent some time this week just reading and absorbing the words on this card. We all need to hear positive affirmations that remind us how strong, brave and smart we are and this card will be propped up where I can see it as I go about my day. There are nine more great sentiments in this set.

It’s Me, Cooper

There I was, enjoying my nap in the sunbeams, tummy full, sweet dreams of treats and cuddles, when I was awakened by That Woman, her voice a bit serious and unrelenting. “Cooper”, she said, “I need your help.”

My help? Hadn’t I been helpful enough already? I spent the morning being cute and loveable just as it says in my job description. And then I remembered: sometimes That Woman runs with scissors and since I did a good job helping her once she might be expecting my assistance again. I think she wasn’t feeling well that time. What could be the problem this time?

Well, it seems That Woman is just jealous of the time I spend enjoying each day, being present in the moment, and napping in the sunshine. She has decided to practice living in the moment, too, without any must do’s and should have’s. To be fair, she gave me the choice of making the cards this week or writing the story. I do share That Woman’s love for all things Penny Black but since I don’t have opposable thumbs, card making is not so easy. It’s the scissors thing.

So here I am keyboarding away with my talented paws. I am grateful for Spell Check and the Delete key. Just wish That Woman had left me with a good idea for a story!

That Woman mentioned we had extra humans in our house for a few days lately. Of all the extra humans that have visited, I liked these two the best. I think they are true “animal people”. They smelled like people who love cats the best, but would be open to letting a dog own them, too. They spoke softly and reached slowly to pet me, so I wasn’t so nervous. They took me along on their long walk by the Tennessee River, too, so that helped me like them even more.

What I don’t like about extra humans in our house is the way the routine changes. I have figured out that double food for breakfast means the humans are leaving and won’t be back before lunch. I try to eat only half and save half for lunchtime, but that’s like a human eating half a chocolate bar and saving half for later.

I always prefer having my dinner early and then hanging out around the table looking pitiful when the humans eat a bit later. But as much as I enjoy the extra food, waiting until 8:00 pm doesn’t work for me. I am always in bed by 7:00, whether it is dark or not. And when the humans go out to eat for the Early Bird Special, there is no second dinner for me. I especially hate when they go out for Chinese food; there are no leftovers for me. I don’t care for hot and spicy.

Has That Woman ever shared with you that we three faithfully watch Jeopardy together every evening? Mr. RWS has done something with the big colorful noisy picture box so that we can watch Jeopardy right after dinner, no matter what time we eat. After the dishes are done and the food room cleaned up, either That Woman or Mr. RWS will call out, “JEOPARDY!” and then Mr. RWS sits in That Woman’s comfy chair while she sits on the floor with me. That’s when I get my toothpaste (I love the beef flavor) and my hair combed. I love having my hair combed as long as That Woman leaves that thing called “my tail” alone. I haven’t figured out what that big fluffy thing is for that follows me around all the time, but I do know I don’t like it handled at all.

After taking care of my teeth and fur, That Woman plays with me while Jeopardy is on. It’s amazing that she can play Froggie or tug the blanket with me while she calls out answers to some of the Jeopardy clues. I won’t say anything to Mr. RWS, but That Woman seems to answer more questions than he does. If the day comes that Jeopardy includes dog related clues, I will join in on the answering part.

Once Jeopardy is over, Mr. RWS lets me out the back door for what he calls “night night potty” and I call taking care of business. When I come back in, I have a long drink of water and settle down in one of my beds. I like it when we do the same thing every day at the same time. That’s why it is so confusing when there are extra humans in our house.

Well, I see That Woman out on the patio, book open and a beverage at hand. I better let her know it is safe to come in the house now. The story is written and ready to make its trip to Penny Black Headquarters. I am expecting a treat or two for my assistance this week along with more time snoozing in the sunshine.

These Happy Critters are excited to share birthday wishes. What else can you do with three cats except stack them! I’ve used only half of the Your Day die and put the sentiment where you wouldn’t expect there to be a sentiment. Who says I can’t think out of the box? My favorite part of this card is that it has a huge smile factor. I also love the Stitched Stackers border on all the edges.

I combined two of the stacker die sets, Stitched Stackers and Ribbon Stackers (not to be confused with stacking cats) to create my base for the Birthday Balloons image. That balloon bouquet reminded me that I had a collection of buttons that I hadn’t used in a while so now I own three less buttons. I love how the clear buttons are just the right size and add a fun dimension to the balloons.

I have indulged my need for bright and happy this week and I have saved the brightest and happiest card for last. This hedgie from the Sweet You transparent set is enjoying a sunshiny day among the flowers and bees. The Picket Fence die makes a great background for him and I’ve borrowed the magical sentiment from the Wiz cling set. There are ten different borders in the Flourish Border set and I love the finishing touch this border adds to the space for my sentiment. Penny Black thinks of everything.

Speaking of bright and happy, here is Cooper demonstrating how to bask in the sunshine. Cooper reminds me every day how to live in the moment and take advantage of sunbeams where you find them. There is no room in his life for worry; his heart is too full of love to have room for anything else.

My biggest thanks to Cooper for writing the story this week. I had a serious attack of Spring Fever after the company left and the only cure was time on the patio enjoying the sunny day and warm breezes. Time to myself also helped cure the lonelies that arrive when the family leaves. How I love spending time with the kids now that they are adults and living interesting lives of their own. I admit to a being a bit jealous of the people in their lives that spend time with them regularly. I love hearing the stories of their vacations, their home remodeling projects, their careers. They are such interesting people, and fun to be with. And they send lovely flowers, too.

Now it is time to clean up and put the scissors safely away. I was glad to see that the St. Patrick’s Day decorations had been taken down before I arrived. These Penny Black people know how to party and I was worried that the confetti and shamrocks had not been cleared out yet.

I hope you have time for yourself this week, either crafting or enjoying the sunbeams. Cooper and I are thankful for the comments you leave, letting us know you stopped by. For now, we are off to the Penny Circle Flickr Gallery to enjoy your work.

Hey Cooper! Great to hear from you again. I’m sure That Woman appreciates all you do for her. You deserve a BIG box of treats. Please let her know I love her cards. Thanks

Cooper earned his extra treats–great job writing the story! Fritz loves to lay in the sun stripe by the sliding glass door. He’s confused when it looks beautifully sunny on the deck but is still really cold & that happens a lot here. What gorgeous flowers–so glad you had a good visit in spite of the weather. Wonderful cards today, Judy! Love the neutral with pops of color for the first one–what a gorgeous stamp! Never thought to use a flourish like you did on the last one, but now I will–thanks for the inspiration! Hugs, Greta

Oh, I LOVE the flower garden (tripled frames) card. All your cards bring sunshine to me always, but this one just perked me right up and made my day. Hi! to that cute Cooper (he probably wouldn’t like “darling Cooper”, would he?)

Lovely cards by that woman and great job by Cooper. The aviary and the framed flowers were my favorites this week – bright and cheery and soft and serene. I think Cooper would agree, company is wonderful to have, but it is nice to get back to routine when they leave. Enjoy the spring days while they are here as in a flash we will be in the heat of summer and wishing for fall!

You and Cooper have entertained me during some peaceful time I managed to get after my crowd left today. And your beautiful cards were a sight to behold while stuck indoors due to rain mixed with some snow. I keep telling myself I’m in the south, I’m in North Carolina not Michigan at least that white stuff isn’t sticking. Your cards did brighten up my dreary day.

Well done Cooper for another entertaining post. You are quite the little storyteller. Please tell that woman how I so enjoyed her cards this week especially the last one – so sunny and uplifting. Be very fortunate you do not live in England (on the other side of the world !) as you would have had to spend the weekend and most of this week in the snow …… once again ! Your guests would not have been able to leave as we live in the country and the lanes (we can’t call them roads as they are way too narrow) were impassable. On the upside it was very pretty and on our walks we met the locals and their dogs all enjoying themselves.
