Runs with Scissors

May 25, 2019

Happy beautiful day in May! Spring is in full bloom in my corner of the world. So appropriate for Penny Black’s latest release: Full Bloom. Here’s what I did lately with a mixture of Penny Black stamps and dies, most are new and a few are favorites from earlier releases.

I love taking inexpensive gift bags and making them special by using Penny Black dies. These bags contain door prizes to be given at our next senior citizens lunch. This is the Floral Arrangement die, one of my favorite dies of all time. It looks spectacular on these purple bags.

Speaking of purple, I’ve used purple as the background for these teddies from the Love and Cuddles stamp set. I am becoming spoiled having dies to cut out cute critters like I did here. The images in this set all have a matching die to make it easy to design your cards. That Diamond Cut die and Lovely Border frame add interest and texture. The Love and Cuddles set also includes that sentiment banner … perfect!

I am enamored with the Be Happy set and its animal planters. It’s so easy to make a dramatic looking card with each of the images. This time it’s the leggy giraffe’s turn with just the right sentiment to finish things off. I think this is one of the most versatile sets ever!

The End

“Don’t cry because it is over; smile because it happened at all”, said Dr. Seuss in The Cat in the Hat.

Dear Readers, it is time for us to smile because Runs with Scissors happened at all. Here it is 179 stories, 1,060 cards and five years later. Runs with Scissors has been a labor of love, as they say, but like all good things, was destined to end some day. I have told all the stories I can think of and fear if I continue any longer, it will be equivalent to showing vacation photos or photos of kids and grandkids to an uninterested captive audience. You all deserve better than that!

Finding the email from Penny Black in January of 2014 asking me to continue with posting on their blog after serving six months on the Penny Black Stamp Squad was a squeal-of-delight experience. It was the start of a wonderful relationship with Penny Black Headquarters and Jill Foster, Penny Black’s Social Media Director.

I have had the best “job” in the world. Penny Black has been generous with supplying me with their latest stamps and dies. I have had the flexibility to work around the events in my life and the creative freedom to combine stamps and dies in a way that makes my heart happy. They gave me a platform to share my stories and indulge my passion for writing.

I have always wanted Runs with Scissors to be a happy place. So many of you mentioned how you begin Saturday mornings with Runs with Scissors and that it is a good way to start your weekend.   That has always made me happy, as I wasn’t sure if a Saturday blog post would have an audience.

Being able to tell my stories and share my life experiences and the family events that brought joy has been an awesome opportunity. I loved recording much of my life’s story; each story like a patch which when joined together creates a colorful quilt. I have a printed copy of all my blog posts and hope some day my kids and grandkids can learn to know me better by reading all 179 stories.

I am most grateful to all of you who read Runs with Scissors every week and said nice things about my cards and took the time to comment and share your own stories. I have read every comment, sometimes with teary eyes, sometimes with a big smile and sometimes in amazement. In return, I hope I was able to convey to all of you my love for Penny Black products, no matter what style you prefer! I have always said there is something for everyone in each Penny Black release.

Whenever you find yourself doing something “for the last time”, it is with mixed emotions. There is a sadness knowing you won’t be doing this same thing again, but there is happiness knowing that you gave it 100% and wouldn’t change a thing. If ever I was going to stop writing Runs with Scissors, I wanted to be sure I would leave knowing I gave it my best. Now is that time.

So, dear friends, “so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good-bye”. For some reason, my vision is blurry and my cheeks are damp.

And we all lived happily ever after.

The End

I think these birthday mice from the It’s Your Day set needed a party background, so I taped off white spaces and then blended Luxe inks to make a colorful striped pattern. Again, there is a matching die set for these stamps, making cut outs easy peasy. Love the font on that sentiment … so happy.

I’ve used the fourth birthday mouse from the It’s Your Day stamp set to be the focal point of this card. The little bee is from the Special Ride set. They are both surrounded by the Flower Circle die cut. I loved that Love You sentiment so much, I had to use it again. Can’t have enough “love you” cards, I say.

I had to say “thank you” one more time to Penny Black, Jill Foster and all of you. I created a background with the Youthful cling stamp and stamped the sentiment on top of it using the Special Sentiments set.

I also want to thank all of you that post your work to the Penny Black Flickr Circle. I am always amazed at the creativity and beauty I find there. So often I say, “why didn’t I think of that?’

Mr. RWS has been supportive of all my Runs with Scissors efforts. Sometimes it meant our skipping a movie or a shopping trip or helping with his jig saw puzzle endeavors. I’m not sure he totally “gets” card making and stamping, but he knows it is important to me and that was good enough for him.

Dear, dear Cooper. It doesn’t even hurt my feelings when I read in the comments that my cards are nice, but the real reason for your visit is Cooper. Cooper has been such a good sport of all the photo taking, the time spent typing instead of playing with him, and having to spend so much time under my desk while I put together yet another Runs with Scissors. I love this dog so much and don’t even mind that Mr. RWS is number one in his life. Being second in Cooper’s life is good enough for me. Thank you all for loving Cooper, too.

This scene of Mr. RWS and Cooper resting along the banks of the nearby Tennessee River makes me yearn to join them for a “river walk” once again. My goal is to create a new photo with the three of us enjoying the sunshine and watching the river flow by. I’d better get to working on that.

Love and hugs to all of you, Judy

We just have to take a moment to extend the biggest thanks AND biggest hugs to our dear Judy. Thank you for all of the inspiration, insights, and heart you have shared with us over the years as you Run with Scissors. It has been an honor to share your cardmaking and writing here on our blog. We wish you all the best in health, creativity, and in enjoying that “river walk” in the sunshine. Love, Your Penny Black Family (Always!)

Judy, New beginnings are always hard, and this is a new beginning for you and your family. I have enjoyed reading your stories these past few years, and your pictures and stories of Cooper always brought a smile. I own an aging Cotton de Tulear (the breed is a cousin of the bichon and looks similar to Cooper), which has made your stories very relatable. Thank you for sharing your life and your positive insights with us. I wish you many happy experiences in the days ahead. Take care of yourself, Mr RWS, and Cooper, you will be missed. Ruth

This is a mixed emotions day for all.of us. It’s fabulous that you are moving on & having time for Mr RWS & Cooper & yourself, everyone deserves that out of life. But it’s sad that our Saturday morning update has come to an end, I haven’t been a fan for a long time but since discovering your site I have checked in constantly enjoying hearing what you’ve done & admiring all your gorgeous, inspirational cards. I’m at the other end of the journey , starting to create cards & layouts at home but with little confidence to share my work with others yet. Your cards today are as fantastic as always, today’s favourite is the purple with bears, awesome. I wish you , Mr RWS & Cooper all the very best for the future whatever you do & I will miss the stories & cards. Andrea x

So sorry to hear this but know you will love being able to enjoy your family time more. There comes a time when all good things must come to an end. I will miss my Saturday morning reading very much.
I feel like I came late to this party so am wondering if there is a place I can find all of your stories to make sure I didn’t miss any of them. Or maybe you should publish them because you have a gift that should be shared.
Good Luck and enjoy your family because family comes first!!

Oh Judy, we will so sadly miss you and of course Cooper–your cards are always so cute or so pretty–of course Penny Black stamps are the star! I understand how difficult things can get as darn it, we get a bit older, end up with some sort of “condition” and have to change up what we do on a day to day basis. I totally understand, as I just celebrated my 40th year of being a PT, yes, the “torturist” kind. It is who I am, what I do and I’m trying to figure out if it’s “time” or not, but I know that in my heart, that is who I will always be. We’re sad that you are stepping down but hopefully you can continue crafting and just maybe pop in once in awhile, especially with some photo’s or news of dear Cooper! Wishing you health and much happiness and time to enjoy those smart grand kids!

Judy, I will miss our time together on Saturdays, yours is like my “other” family. But most of all THANK YOU for sharing your stories and your time spent making those terrific cards. I know it must have been difficult writing a weekly, but you made it seem like we were talking on the phone and catching up. Give Cooper lots of snuggles and thanks to Mr RWS for sharing you with our PB stamping community. tina

Thanks so much for sharing your life stories with us. They’ve been so much fun to read, and so poignant at moments. My inbox has way too many posts to ever read them all, but your posts always popped out as must reads. The mix of cards and stories was a great idea, somehow so appropriate to be making handmade cards to reach out to people and the sharing that was a theme in your life. You’re quite a remarkable lady. Enjoy your sweet husband and Cooper.

Your creativeness has been a wonderful inspiration, and Cooper has made me smile–I think I love him almost as much as you do. I’ll miss you very much, and perhaps some weekend in the future you’ll post an update for us. In the meantime, thanks so much for all the enjoyment, and I wish you health and happiness with your beautiful family in that beautiful place. God bless.

I have always enjoyed reading your blog, yet rarely commented. Your sentences: “Whenever you find yourself doing something “for the last time”, it is with mixed emotions. There is a sadness knowing you won’t be doing this same thing again, but there is happiness knowing that you gave it 100% and wouldn’t change a thing.” really resonates with me, as I will be retiring from my teaching career at the end of June. I totally understand the full range of mixed emotions. Enjoy your walks on the river bank. Perhaps we’ll hear from you again in the future. Wishing you all the best.

Oh Judy, I feel like I’m moving away all over again. Last June I retired from 30 years of medical research at a pediatric hospital then moved 1300 miles from all I knew. Last weekend we finally moved into our forever home, but I only had low speed phone data because I used up my high speed and our new home WiFi wasn’t set up yet so when I tried to read the post, it wouldn’t load. Kinda glad it didn’t because it would have been a bummer of a day. Not knowing many people here yet, you were a stable friend I could rely on each Saturday. I have so enjoyed your cards, but especially your stories. I loved hearing about your family. How will we ever survive not being able to watch Evelyn and Jack grow up? Sharing your personal life with all of us readers was really special. And Cooper, oh Cooper, such a star! Having 2 pups myself, I really enjoyed his adventures. Oh, and the posts he wrote were hilarious! You are an amazing storyteller, Judy.
We will all miss you so much. I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I am enjoying mine (surprisingly). I hope the best for you and your health. I will miss hearing about your life with Mr. RWS, Cooper and the rest of your clan the most. I feel like I am losing a friend, but all for the good. You are entering a new stage of your life and I hope it brings all the happiness you deserve!

I’m afraid I am not much of a commenter-but I do want to wish you well. It’s hard to give up the things we love to do. I made cards for my church for almost 20 years and finally had to give it up this year. I’m getting older and the stress of getting them done on time and making them look extra special for our homebound and older members was stressing me out!! I still make a lot of cards-I have a huge family and friends that I still keep up with! I have enjoyed reading your posts every week and hearing about your family and Cooper and Mr RWS! I hope you will have more time to spend with them now. Thank you for sharing your life with us! Sending prayers that your health will stay good!!

Dear Judy, five years sure whizzed by, didn’t it? Thank YOU for sharing your wit, humor, and of course your cards with us. While I’m sad that RWS is over, I’m happy that you’ll spend more time with L and Cooper–they deserve your full attention and now is the time to share those river walks. I’m blessed in knowing that I can pick up the phone and call you whenever I want (keeping daylight savings in mind!) and I hope to be doing it more often. Take good care, Judy, and don’t ever put those scissors away.

Oh dear–I wasn’t expecting this, Judy. Of course nothing lasts forever, but I guess I forgot that as I did expect RWS would always be here. I have blurry eyes, too. You always inspire me with your projects (LOVE the die cuts on the purple bags), but the stories/writings were really a blessing. Thank you so much for sharing yourself–making me laugh, cry, think. And Cooper–what can I say?! Bless Mr RWS for supporting you taking time for all of us. Sending love & hugs from Oregon & wishing you only the best, Greta

Oh My, Dear friend, I sit here in total shock, sadness, and tears, running down my face! To say I’m going to miss you, Mr.RWS and the ever delightful Cooper is an understatement, hope I will be able to see some of your posts on Facebook from time to time or some of your lovely work on Flicker. I have been a fan and I hope a friend for so long now, first it was on the Hero Arts site, the first place I met you, and enjoyed your art work, and the pictures you posted of your’s and Mr. RWS trip to Ireland, seems like yesterday, the time flies, doesn’t it dear friend?

Your Saturday morning commentary was so delightful and wonderful, a cup of coffee and off to the computer I would go, to sit and read about your happenings of the past week, and about your life, and it was such a fun visit, sometimes I would laugh out loud at the funny stories you would tell, and the tales of your growing up military, as I could relate, or at least my grown children could! Not only are you a wonderful artist, but a most talented writer, and teller of beautiful stories, I’m going to miss you, girl!!! Take care Judy and enjoy your’s and your family walks along the river with your husband, and that ever wonderful pup of your’s, Cooper! Our Scooby is just like Cooper in that he absolutely loves my husband, yes he loves me too, but his Dad is very special to him, and I too, will take the second in line for his love!

Not going to say goodby, as I hope to see you from time to time on FB and the Penny Black Flickr page…I will be looking for you dear friend! Again take care Judy! Lots of love and hugs to you and your’s!

I miss your cards and stories! I just bought Snowy for Christmas cards this year because of your cards. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of PB stamps but just hadn’t gotten him before and saw one of your cards and got nostalgic. I hope your walks with Cooper and Mr. RWS have been delightful. Consider a post this Christmas to us? Thank you.
