Take Flight 20 – Day 12, HOO-ray for Graduation!
February 15, 2013
Penny Black designer Elizabeth Allan is back today with a hand-made and stamped vellum envelope. What a festive holder for a gift card or money for the celebrating graduate! Check out her tutorial below:
Instructions:
Stamp “Very Wise” on watercolor paper in Onyx Black VersaFine and heat emboss with clear powder.
Watercolor the image and then trim. Set aside.
Create an envelope from vellum and stamp “Indian Wheel” in Wheat VersaMagic.
Before gluing the sides, punch two small holes in the bottom flap and thread a piece of gold twine through the back.
Create two matching holes in the top flap. Insert the note, gift card or money and thread the ends through the holes in the top flap and tie in a bow.
Tip/Hint: Nail polish applied to the cut ends of the twine will help prevent raveling.
Stamp the banner from “Embellishments” in Delicata Golden Gliztz ink on White and Blue Skies cardstocks. Trim the banners.
Spell “HOORAY” using Kate’s Alphabet in Onyx Black VersaFine. Add random glitter dots with a sparkle gel pen.
Design Option: Add “faux” stitches with a black pen around the border of the blue banner. Layer the blue banner on top of the white banner using dimensional foam.
Attach the banners to the front of the envelope with adhesive. Add the “fussy-cut” owl with dimensional foam.
Finished size: 2-1/2 x 3-5/8
Supplies:
Penny Black Stamps: Very Wise 4321F, Embellishments 30-161, Kate’s Alphabet 30-168, Indian Wheel 40-202
Penny Black Mix & Match Cardstock: Storm (White) 01-001, Clear Skies (Blue) 10-002
3M Scotch: Dimensional Foam Tape
Imagine Crafts/Tsukineko: Onyx Black VersaFine, Wheat VersaMagic, Delicata Golden Glitz, Clear Embossing Powder
Tombow Markers
Other: Watercolor Paper, Vellum, Silver Sparkle Gel Pen, Black Micron Pen

I love the look of vellum – great idea!
A stylish and cute project! Lovely idea! TFS!
I had to smile for I’m just working with the Tombow markers using them as they are & with the Blender Pen. I’ve only dabbled slightly with watercolouring using the Tombows so I’m looking forward to having a proper attempt at that. I particularly like the way you stamped the vellum & how the pattern echoes the owl’s eyes, not only in shape, but also in colour. Your threading mechanism is delightful & thanks for the tip about the nail varnish. Kate’s Alphabet will have to go on my wish list I think.

Very cute. Is there a pattern for the envelope?
Hello Joy,
I used a template from my blog here (http://elizabethallan-blog.blogspot.com/p/templates.html). Enlarge or reduce to any size to fit your project. Have fun!
Cute owl stamp. Great gift idea!
The owl is so cute! Also love the vellum envelope. Great ideas, thanks
Card is great. Love the ribbon idea.
Hooray for this adorable card!
wow great how to, and so cute!
I am never able to trim so nice. How do you do it?
Hello Karin,
I love to fussy cut and get great results from using my Cutter Bee scissors. The smaller size yields great precision and they stay extremely sharp. I find it very helpful to move the paper as I trim rather than move the scissors. Thank you for stopping by for a visit!
Wow! Cute owl and fab envelope!
Love the cute, scholarly looking owl – perfect for graduation cards! Envelope is a great idea too.
Great card.
This is a cute Owl, I love the project.

I LOVE the FUN Owl and card for today!! SUch GREAT colors and coloring!! THANKS for sharing and for the chance to win!! Have a FABULOUS WEEKEND!! =)
What a darling project. I would have liked to hear a little more about watercoloring with the markers. Was it done like we learned in the tutorial earlier this week when using watercolor pencils? i.e. spread the water on the white section, and then move into the colored area, bringing as much color down as you want? Thanks for a useful project.
Hello Linda. Thank you for your interest in the watercoloring technique. I used the Tombow markers in a combination of direct to paper and plastic palette transfer. You can view a video of the plastic palette transfer method here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp0uqUia0l0. I have some additional projects that use the Tombow markers in a variety of ways here: http://elizabethallan-blog.blogspot.com/search/label/Tombow. Have a wonderful day!
Winning this collection would make me the happiest stamper in the stamping world!

The owl is adorable and I love the envelope too – more gorgeous stamps! xx
Really like the idea of stamping like that on the vellum. Cute project.
Very cute idea. What’s your way of getting the alphabet letters straight when you stamp them?
Hello Cynthia……Penny Black’s new Kate’s Alphabet makes it easy since it is an acrylic set and I can see through the letters. For added assistance, I draw a very faint pencil line to use as a guide. After I have finished stamping and the ink is dry, I erase out the guide line. Thank you for stopping by today.
Love this project! That owl is adorable. 😀
